Story
A new home
In the year A.D. 2087, the Earth has been decimated by World War III and its capacity to sustain life is rapidly deteriorating. With the extinction of humanity a real possibility, the surviving countries form the Greater Unified Nations and turn their gaze to space in search of a new home.
Edge Maverick and his childhood friend Reimi Saionji are chosen to lead the maiden voyage of the Calnus, a Space Reconnaissance Force ship that will join the exploration voyage. They blast into a black hole, not knowing whether they will discover humankind's salvation or their own demise.
Characters
Meet the crew
Edge Maverick is a kind-hearted young earthling who, as his name suggests, can sometimes be hasty and reckless. His strong sense of justice is reinforced with bravery and he puts himself forward for the maiden voyage of the Space Reconnaissance Force (SRF), which sets out to explore distant galaxies as mankind faces extinction following World War III.
Reimi Saionji is Edge's friend and source of moral support, and she tries to keep his feet on the ground when the party is soaring through space. Born into an illustrious household, she too was selected for the SRF at a young age and has developed into an expert archer.
Faize Sheifa Beleth is an explorer from the planet Eldar. He is a talented young scientist and an extremely logical thinker, which is sometimes at odds with Edge's irrational enthusiasm. However, he remains affable and has impeccable manners.
Gameplay
A dangerous expedition
As you land on the planet Aeos at the beginning of the game, you're able to explore a small area of the jungle environment and get to grips with the controls. You'll spend much of the game exploring richly detailed planets, looking for items to help you on your journey. To aid this, some characters can harvest plants for healing berries while others can extract ore from rock faces and use it to build and upgrade equipment.
As the map opens up, you'll encounter many weird and wonderful creatures to battle and if you manage to sneak up on them, you can execute a pre-emptive strike to give yourself the advantage. Once in battle, you have complete control over one character, so you can dodge, weave, chase and attack and you can switch control to a different character at any time. Your friends will, of course, help you in the fight and you can select the kind of approach you'd like to take, be it attacking or defensive.
As well as your basic attack and ability to use items, you'll learn special moves, combos and magic attacks - known as Symbols - as your characters progress and you add new members to your party. A particularly useful tactic is to press the circle button to dodge enemy attacks and break through their defences.
