When Vikings Attack art competition winners

Take a look at the imaginative winners of our design a character competition.

The Vikings have invaded PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 - and a specially created character is ready to join the townsfolk to fend them off. Our When Vikings Attack competition challenged you to design a resistance fighter to beat back the horn-helmeted intruders. Developer Clever Beans picked 11 winners from the vast number of entertaining entries.

First place prize:

• A PlayStation Vita system.
• Their design created as a playable character in When Vikings Attack.

What Clever Beans thought:

"We wanted something that looked cool and would be great to animate as well. When we saw Mondchueh's picture we started thinking about how funny it would be to have a guy running around, desperately trying to remove this giant flapping fish from his head... and that was it, we knew we could do something amazing with it!"

What Clever Beans thought:

"This one had a really cool feel to it; we loved the art style and the look. We really felt like you would see this guy sitting on a windy British beach in his vintage swimwear, rocking a handsome handlebar moustache."

"We really liked that Sandrampage used the game's theme of improvised weapons and rebelling civilians to make this character. He's a makeshift hero using whatever he can find to do battle..."

"Well this one is crazy... is it a man dressed in vegetables? A man made of vegetables? Or maybe it's just a decoy soldier? Either way, some real imagination went into this one and it looks amazing!"

"We actually have a zoo level in the game where you end up rampaging through a penguin enclosure and we thought it could be great to have this guy hiding in there with the real penguins. The game is scattered with lots of hidden characters to find and he could have been a cool edition. We didn't quite know how to get his flippers to carry objects though..."

"We couldn't quite work this one out, is he a Viking? A zombie? A pirate? Either way, it looks superb! Maybe this one will make it into a sequel?"

"This was one that we couldn't believe we missed when creating our own characters. The Queen should be out there fighting the Vikings with her loyal subjects! We thought better of it in the end, as we weren't sure how Buckingham Palace would react to her throwing bins around outside a nightclub..."

"We liked the idea of an old English captain, snuff box and powdered wig in tow. Again, this one was a real contender but we couldn't think of any really cool animations to go along with it."
